Sound Level Meters
CEL240 Class 2 Sound Level Meter
The CEL240 is an easy to use sound level meter that meets the international standards to Class 2 / Type 2, as required by many noise measurement standards. It measures the Fast or Slow sound level with both "A" and "C" frequency weightings.
- General noise measurements
- Alarm sound level testing
- Quick and easy to use
- Lightweight but rugged case
- 2 year warranty
- Calibration certificate included
- IEC 61672 Class 2
- ANSI S1.4 and IEC 60651 to Type 2
It is essential that a sound level meter meets these standards if it is to be used for any important measurements, particularly those that involve any other legal purposes. The CEL240 meets the strict demands of IEC 61672, IEC 60651 and ANSI S1.4 and is provided with a Calibration Certificate at no extra cost, so you can make your noise measurements with confidence.
An AC output and optional DC output mean this meter can be connected to a level recorder, PC equipped with an A/D converter or integrated with another data logging system.
See the specifications tab for more details about the standards and noise measurement range.
Digital Technology and Graphical Display
|The graphical display gives the option of viewing the sound level as a simple number (shown to the left) or as a graph, clearly showing the variation of noise over time (see main image).|
Unlike most sound level meters in this price range, the CEL240 uses the latest in digital technology - models using the older analog techniques tend to drift more over time and with temperature and air pressure changes. Sampling and digitizing the signal closer to the microphone ensures a much more stable sound level meter for repeatable measurements.
The CEL240 Sound Level Meter is ideal for noise measurement applications that do not need automatic averaging (Lavg or Leq) or data logging. Here are some typical applications for this meter. If you are unsure then please drop us an email, we are happy to advise.
General Noise Survey
As this meter meets the strict IEC 61672 standard to Class 2, it can be used to make accurate and repeatable measurements.
If the regulations you are measuring to demand the use of a Class 2 meter but do not require an integrating meter then this one should be ideal.
Fire Alarm Testing
The standards for fire alarm testing usually demand the measurement of the "A" weighted "Fast" sound level. The CEL240 sound level meter provides this measurement.
Although not a data logging meter, the CEL240 has an AC output and an optional (free of charge) DC output, making it ideal for connection to a data logging system via a suitable A/D converter.
Noise at Work - Integrating Meters
The European noise at work regulations demand the use of an Integrating sound level meter that produces measurements such as the Leq (average sound level).
The CEL240 Sound Level Meter is controlled using just two buttons, one to the left and one to the right. The graphical display ensures that operation and the selection of options is as easy as possible.
1. Switch On
Ensure 3 x AA batteries are fitted on press the red button to switch the sound level meter on.
After a brief warm-period of just a few seconds, the meter will show the current sound level on the display.
The exact content of the display depends on how you set the meter up last time, as it remembers these settings for your convenience.
2. Calibration Check
Some regulations and guidelines state that the meter's calibration should be checked before making measurements, and that you should keep records of these calibration checks.
Fit the Calibrator over the microphone as shown on the right and switch it on. The meter automatically detects the presence and correct fitting of the Calibrator and then starts the calibration process, which only takes a few seconds.
3. Changing Settings
As the meter saves its settings, you should only need to do this occasionally. The left-hand button cycles through the following main settings:
|Display Type||Graph or numbers|
|Measurement Range||30 to 100 dB or 60 to 130 dB|
|Time Weighting||Fast, Slow or Impulse|
|Frequency Weighting||"A" or "C" weighting|
The right-hand button is used to change the current setting of any of these parameters.
4. Make the Measurements
You can now read the sound level from the display.
In the example on the right, the meter is set to read the Fast Sound Level (LAF). The current level is 53 dB(A) and the maximum (since last reset) is 80.9 dB(A).
Press the reset button (right-hand button) to reset the max reading.
Options and Order Codes
The CEL240 Sound Level Meter can be purchased on its own or with a selection of accessories. The CEL240-K Kit contains the meter, windshield, carrying case and a Calibrator, as required by many noise measurement applications.
|CEL240-K Noise Measurement Kit: £610.00
Includes the Class Two Digital Sound Level Meter, Windshield, Acoustic Calibrator and Carrying Case.
Do I Need a Calibrator?
That depends really on the type of noise measurements you are making, whether they are being made for legal purposes, or whether there are any regulations that demand the use of a Calibrator before making measurements, as many do.
The items are available to be purchased individually:
|CEL240 Sound Level Meter: £284.00
Just the Class 2 Digital Sound Level Meter, for applications that do not require the use of a Calibrator.
|CEL120/2 Sound Level Calibrator: £252.00
For checking the function of the meter before making measurements as required by many regulations.
|CEL6841 Foam Windshield: £10.00
Reduces wind noise and protects the microphone.
|CEL6840 Carrying Case: £74.00
Space for the meter, calibrator and windshield.
Noise Dosemeter Combination Kits
Do you need noise dosemeters too, for a detailed noise at work assessment? Our Combination Kits include a sound level meter along with dosemeters. You can make quick checks with the hand-held meter and longer term noise exposure measurements in line with the regulations with the shoulder mounted dBadge.
A typical Combination Kit includes:
The CEL240 is a "general purpose" sound level meter and meets the international standards to Type 2 or Class 2. For any noise measurement that requires accurate, repeatable and comparable results, especially when used for hearing protection or other legal purposes, it is essential to use one that meets these standards.
